The Calvin Christian Lady Squires opened their conference season Tuesday afternoon playing at home against the Lee Rebels. The first three innings of the game showed to be a close match-up with each team having no runs, no hits and no errors. Abby Green had 6 of her 7 strike-outs in those first three innings and Rachel DeVries had a great catch in right field to help hold the Rebels scoreless. In the fourth inning the game picked up excitement as Lee had 2 outs, and then came up with 2 hits to place runners on first and third. The Lady Squires were able to retire the Rebels with a 1-3 play from Green to Hillary Glover.
The Lady Squires then took the lead in the game as number one batter, Kelsey Kooistra, hit a single and then stole to second. Courtney Tolar was able to make contact, and despite an out, advanced Kooistra to third. Michal Hoogland then layed down a bunt, and on a fielder’s choice attempted throw-out at third by Lee, Kooistra made the run for home and was called safe on a slide into homeplate. Abby Green then popped up for an out, but Hoogland tagged up and stole to third. Taylor Hans then has a hard hit to right field and drives in Hoogland for a run.
The fifth inning turned out to be scoreless for both teams. Olivia Stegeman helped hold the Rebels scoreless with an outstanding catch in left field. The sixth inning was owned by the Rebels. With a combination of their hitting and Calvin’s errors, the Rebels were able to bring in 5 runs. Despite good defensive play by Calvin and holding Lee scoreless in the 7th inning, the Lady Squires were unable to add to their total runs in the bottom of the inning.
The final score was 5 to 2 with Lee’s pitcher, Amanda Emelander, finishing with 12 strike-outs and 0 walks. Lee also had 8 hits and 0 errors compared to Calvin’s 2 hits and 2 errors.
The Lady Squires next game is Wednesday at 4:15 on Calvin’s home field against Allendale.
