Boys Varsity Swimming · Drew Besselsen Moves on to MHSAA Division 2 State Swim Finals

After a long season of preparation and hard work, it comes down to today.  Drew Besselsen still has a shot at an individual state title at today’s MHSAA Division 2 State Championship Swim Meet.

500 Free – Drew placed 7th in the preliminaries on Friday and that will qualify him for the State Championship heat of this event.  He swam a 4:45.98 which is almost 7 seconds faster than his seed time.  While a State Championship may seem out of reach, the top finisher on Friday swam about 8 seconds faster than any other swimmer in the field, spots 2 through 8 are up for grabs.  Only 3.2 seconds separate the #2 seed from the #7 seed.  So in a race that includes a start, 20 lengths of the pool, 19 flip turns, and a final reach for the wall, technique, pace and endurance will all help to decide this race.

200 IM – In Drew’s other individual event, he cut 1.2 seconds off his seed time, swam a 1:59.93, and finished 11th.  Drew will be trying to cut some additional time today and possibly win the consolation heat and move up to 9th.

200 Free Relay – Drew and his teammates from Unity Christian (Jordan Herd, Jimmy Wallinga, and Ben Woldyk) were seeded 14th in the 200 Free Relay.  The swam a 1:32.73 which was 0.2 seconds faster than their seed time and placed them 15th after the preliminary round.  They will swim in the consolation heat today.

400 Free Relay – Drew, Jordan, Jimmy & Ben also swam this relay on Friday in a time of 3:24.77, again swimming better than their seed time.  They were seeded 20th and move up to 17th in the preliminaries.  Unfortunately, they needed to take off another second to finish 16th and qualify for the consolation heat.

As you have read, the Calvin Christian/Unity Christian boys swim team had a great day yesterday.  In each event, the team performed better than their seed time.  Swimming at the State Championship Meet is a wonder experience.  The boys will have one more chance to swim today as they finish a great swim season.  Congratulations.
